Marine Strategy Framework Directive

Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 June 2008 establishing a framework for community action in the field of marine environmental policy (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) is one of the most important pillars forming the marine environment legal framework in the European Union.

Main features:

– Each Member State shall, in respect of each marine region or subregion
concerned, develop a marine strategy Status (Article 5)
– Obligation to comply with the Good Environmental Status (Article 9) as
described in Annex I and Annex III of the MSFD.
– Monitoring Programs: to comply with the regulations and the procedures
established by the MSFD in order to achieve the goal set by 2020.
– Sponsored by the Community Financial Instruments (Article 22)

This Directive establishes a deadline for all Member States to reach an optimal level of oceanic quality and preservation
